Discover Essen-Borbeck: Palace Park, Village Square and a Peaceful Feel

Between the palace park, the old village centre and quiet streets: Essen-Borbeck is a district many trade-fair and business travellers don't know yet – and that's exactly why a detour is worth it.

A district with history

Essen-Borbeck lies in the north of the city and at first glance feels like a little village of its own in the middle of the Ruhr area. Coming from the city centre or from Messe Essen, it takes only a few minutes by car or tram – and suddenly you're standing in one of the loveliest corners of the city. The old village centre, with its market square, small shops and cafés, has kept its cosy charm to this day, entirely without the bustle of the big city.

Schloss Borbeck and its park

The heart of the district is Schloss Borbeck, a former residence of the princess-abbesses of Essen. Today the palace is a popular venue for events and a meeting point for anyone who simply wants to stroll through the spacious palace park. In autumn in particular, the park shows its most beautiful side: colourful leaves, quiet paths along the moats and lovely views of the palace itself again and again. For a short walk after a long day at the trade fair or a full day of work, it's exactly the right balance.

Village square, markets and small shops

Around the historic village square you'll find bakeries, cafés and small owner-run shops side by side. If you like, there are also regular weekly markets with regional produce. It's a good place to escape the everyday for an hour, have a coffee and take a deep breath before heading back into the hustle of the trade fair or the office.

Well connected – ideal for your stay

Borbeck is well connected to Essen city centre, the main station and Messe Essen via the tram lines and the nearby main traffic routes. That makes the district interesting not only for an excursion, but also as a quieter alternative when you simply want to unwind after a demanding day – without giving up good connections.

After a walk through the palace park, it's a lovely feeling to come back to your own cosy apartment instead of a cramped hotel room. Space to settle in, your own kitchen for the evening and the quiet you need after a long day – for many of our guests, that's what makes the difference.
