Rent a Holiday Apartment in Essen – Direct from Your Host
A holiday apartment in Essen is almost always the better choice than a hotel room – more space, your own kitchen, a washing machine, and from the second or third night simply the better price. We rent out our apartments ourselves, with no agency in between: you book directly with us, save the platforms' service fee and have a dedicated contact person if anything comes up.
All our apartments are fully furnished and ready to move into: a fully equipped kitchen, high-speed Wi-Fi, a smart TV, comfortable beds plus bed linen and towels. Check-in is keyless and available around the clock – even if your train is delayed or the meeting runs late.
Where to stay in Essen? The locations at a glance
Essen is spread out – where you stay determines how much time you spend travelling. These are the locations we cover:
Near the trade fair & Grugahalle: the first choice for fair visitors and exhibitors. The U11 runs from the main station to the fair entrance in around ten minutes. Details on our page holiday apartment near Messe Essen.
City centre & main station: the most convenient option if you arrive without a car – our apartment at Opernplatz is a two-minute walk from the main station, with a lift and an underground parking space.
Rüttenscheid and surroundings: the city's liveliest quarter with cafés, restaurants and bars along the "Rü", plus Grugapark and Museum Folkwang nearby. More under holiday apartment Essen-Rüttenscheid.
Essen-Katernberg by Zollverein: quietly located right by the UNESCO World Heritage site – ideal for culture travellers. See holiday apartment at Zollverein.
Western Essen (Frohnhausen, Altendorf): conveniently placed by the A40, quick towards Mülheim, Duisburg and Oberhausen – and still in the city centre within minutes.
What a holiday apartment in Essen should cost
The price depends heavily on the dates. On normal weekends, holiday apartments in Essen are considerably cheaper than hotels of comparable quality – during the big trade fairs the picture flips: prices rise across the city and the places near the fairgrounds go first. If you are flexible, choosing dates outside the fair weeks saves noticeably.
With us you see the final price before booking – without the service fee that platforms add on top. For longer stays from around a week we offer staggered rates; just enquire with your dates.
When to book
For major events such as SPIEL (October), the Essen Motor Show (November/December), Security Essen (September) or IPM (January), accommodation in Essen is often gone months in advance. Our recommendation: book three to six months ahead for these dates. For a normal weekend, one or two weeks' notice is usually enough. You will find all the dates in our trade fair calendar for Essen.
Holiday apartment or hotel – when is which worth it?
For a single night with a late arrival, a hotel can be more convenient. From two or three nights the maths clearly favours the apartment: you have breakfast when you want instead of working around buffet hours, cook in the evening rather than eating out every day, and with several people you get separate bedrooms instead of a rollaway bed. For families and groups the difference is largest – a hotel room for four is hard to find in Essen, an apartment for four is not.
What to experience in Essen
Essen is often underestimated. Zollverein with the Ruhr Museum is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most impressive place of industrial heritage in the Ruhr area. Museum Folkwang is one of Germany's most important art museums, and the Aalto Theatre is considered one of Europe's finest opera houses. Grugapark and Lake Baldeney in the south are the city's green side – and families enjoy trips to the Gasometer Oberhausen or the Zoom Erlebniswelt in Gelsenkirchen. Suitable apartments for families are listed under family holiday apartment in Essen.
Getting here and parking
By car you reach Essen via the A40, A42 and A52. If you are heading to the fair, bear in mind that the car parks there fill up early on event days and cost around €12 per day – several of our apartments have their own parking space or free parking nearby. By train you arrive at Essen main station right in the city, from where the metro and tram take you to every district.

Wir waren als 4-köpfige Familie vor Ort. Die Wohnung ist klein aber fein. Ein Supermarkt ist fußläufig gut erreichbar. Die Lage zur Zeche Zollverein ist super (25 Minuten zu Fuß). Der Stellplatz vor der Tür ist perfekt.
