Autumn holidays in the Ruhr area: time for the whole family
The NRW autumn holidays are just around the corner, and at this time of year the Ruhr area is at its most beautiful: colourful parks, manageable distances and plenty of destinations that are worth a visit even in cooler weather. If you come to Essen or Mülheim with children, you will find enough to do for one or two relaxed weeks – without hours of driving.
Out and about: parks, lakes and playgrounds
In the holidays, Grugapark and Baldeneysee are ideal starting points for a family day out. Pumpkin fields, feeding the ducks along the shore and long walking paths combine nicely with a bike ride or a round on a pedal boat. Smaller green spaces such as Krupp-Park in the city centre are also perfect for a short stop when there is still time between two activities.
Indoor ideas for rainy days
Autumn in the Ruhr area also means that not every day stays dry. On rainy days, the Deutsches Plakat Museum or a guided tour of Zeche Zollverein are well worth it, with children learning plenty about the region's mining history. Swimming pools and smaller leisure attractions in Essen and Mülheim also fill a rainy afternoon quickly – and keep everyone's mood up.
Why a holiday apartment is more practical during the holidays
Especially with children, you quickly see how valuable your own apartment is compared to a classic hotel room. Our apartments in Essen and Mülheim have a fully equipped kitchen where breakfast and small meals can be prepared without any fuss – handy when not everyone is ready to head out at the same time in the morning. Separate rooms, or a sleeping area that can be set apart from the living area, also mean tired children can go to bed earlier while the adults still enjoy a little quiet time.
Staying flexible despite changeable weather
The big advantage of having your own place during the holidays: plans can be changed spontaneously. If the morning starts off rainy but the sun breaks through in the afternoon, nobody is tied to fixed check-in times or excursion schedules. If you stay longer, you will also appreciate the washing machine and plenty of storage space for suitcases, bikes or jackets that got wet – without the room feeling cramped.
Our planning tip
Essen and Mülheim are centrally located in the Ruhr area, so day trips to Oberhausen, Duisburg or the Bergisches Land are easy to arrange if your holiday could use some variety. When choosing accommodation, it pays to look for an apartment with good transport links and parking, so the drives to your destinations stay short. We would be delighted to welcome your family for the autumn holidays – with enough space for everyone and a kitchen that feels just like home.
