Villa Hügel Essen: Krupp History, Parkland and Baldeneysee in One Place

Villa Hügel in the south of Essen combines Krupp history, extensive parkland and the closeness of Baldeneysee – a destination for culture, family and relaxation during your stay in Essen.

If you really want to get to know Essen, there is one place you simply cannot miss: Villa Hügel in the south of the city. The former home of the Krupp family of industrialists sits above Baldeneysee, surrounded by extensive parkland with mature trees – and today it is one of the loveliest places to visit in the city. For everyone staying with us in a PrimeTimeSuites apartment, this is an outing that is truly worth it.

History you can touch

Villa Hügel was built in the 19th century by Alfred Krupp and served for generations as the family's stately residence. Walking through the generous rooms – or simply strolling across the grounds – you quickly sense just how important Essen once was as an industrial centre. Today the estate belongs to the Krupp foundation and is used as a cultural and exhibition venue, with changing exhibitions ranging from art to cultural history. It is always worth checking the current dates before your visit, as the programme changes regularly.

The park as a place to unwind

You don't even need to visit an exhibition to enjoy Villa Hügel. The surrounding park is freely accessible and invites you to wander among old trees, wide meadows and beautiful paths. In autumn in particular, when the leaves change colour, it is a popular spot for a quiet afternoon – ideal for taking a deep breath after a day at the trade fair or a long day at work.

From Villa Hügel it is just a short walk down to Baldeneysee.

Right by Baldeneysee

One big advantage: Villa Hügel lies right next to Baldeneysee. So if you like, you can easily combine your visit with a walk along the water, a bike ride or a break in one of the cafés on the shore. For families with children, it's a lovely mix of culture and fresh-air activity – with no stressful journey involved.

Good to know for your visit

Villa Hügel is easy to reach by public transport, so you can happily leave your car where it is. For a relaxed visit, allow a few hours – for the exhibition, a walk through the park and perhaps a detour down to the lake. If you'd like to explore the region beyond Essen, there are other green destinations nearby that we have already written about here on the blog.

The perfect base: your holiday apartment

Whether you're here for a trade fair, a business trip or a family outing – Villa Hügel is quickly reached from our holiday apartments in Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr. After an eventful day in the green, you'll look forward to your own kitchen, plenty of space to settle in and the peace and quiet of your own four walls – far more relaxing than a hotel room. Take a look at our apartments and start planning your next stay in Essen.
