For families visiting the Ruhr region, Grugapark is a real winner: several playgrounds, a water playground in summer, wide lawns for running around and picnicking, plus the Grugabahn, a little park railway, keep things varied. If you're staying in one of our family-friendly apartments with its own kitchen, you can easily put together a picnic before you set off and spend the day in the green without any restaurant stress.

But a detour is also worthwhile after a long day at the fair or a client meeting: a quiet walk through the themed gardens or a break by the water helps clear your head before you head back to the apartment and on to Messe Essen the next morning. Good to know
Grugapark is open all year round; there is an admission charge, though reduced rates are available for children and families. You'll find set opening hours and current prices directly on the official Grugapark website, as these can change with the season. It's best to allow one to two hours for a relaxed stroll – more if you'd also like to visit the zoo.
